During her childhood Maria Tsimbourla was enchanted by the magical Zulu stories and fables told by the boarding schools' housekeepers which she attended with her sister for their first few school years. These tales and fables, rich with wonder and imagination, left a lasting impression on her. 'This is no wonderland', a series of paintings, is inspired by those mesmerising stories and the sense of magic they brought to her early years.
